Weekly Book Review

The Baby Thief  by Barbara Bisantz Raymond

If you're looking for a gripping, eye-opening read, The Baby Thief by Barbara Bisantz Raymond is a book that will stick with you long after you turn the last page. It dives into the shocking true story of Georgia Tann, a woman who ran a notorious baby trafficking operation in the mid-20th century, disguised as a respectable adoption agency.

What I found most fascinating—and disturbing—was how Tann manipulated the system and society's perceptions of adoption. She exploited vulnerable parents, taking babies under false pretenses, and placed them into wealthy families, often for profit. Many of these adoptive families were unaware of the shady practices behind the scenes, believing they were saving orphans.

Raymond does an excellent job of presenting the facts without losing the emotional weight of the story. The book is both well-researched and deeply personal, especially since the author weaves in her own adoption experiences. This added layer makes the narrative feel intimate and relatable, even as it explores such dark and heartbreaking topics.

One of the things I appreciated most is how the book also sheds light on the long-lasting effects of Tann's actions—showing the struggles adoptees faced in uncovering their true identities. It’s not just a history lesson; it’s a call to reflect on modern adoption systems and the importance of transparency and ethics.

While the subject matter is heavy, Raymond’s storytelling keeps you engaged, making it a hard book to put down. I’d recommend it to anyone interested in true crime, history, or stories that challenge the status quo. It’s a reminder of how far we’ve come—and how much work still needs to be done—to protect children and families.

Overall, The Baby Thief is a powerful, heartbreaking, and thought-provoking read. If you’re ready for a book that will make you feel and think deeply, this one’s for you.
